The Altadena Rebuild Coalition, led by the Southern California Chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects (SOCAL NOMA), has launched to address the critical rebuilding efforts required after the devastating Eaton Fire of 2025. This coalition, comprised of Minority Organizations and professionals from the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industries, is committed to assisting Altadena’s historic Black community as they recover, rebuild, and preserve their cultural legacy.
Altadena holds a unique place in Southern California’s history as a sanctuary for African Americans fleeing systemic racism and the harsh realities of the Jim Crow South during the early 20th century. Over generations, Altadena has flourished into a vibrant community, renowned for its artistic, cultural, and entrepreneurial contributions. However, the recent wildfires have ravaged thousands of acres, including significant portions of this historic community. Many families, businesses, and landmarks tied to Altadena’s Black heritage have been directly impacted.
The Altadena Rebuild Coalition was formed to ensure this community’s recovery is prioritized, its historical significance recognized, and its voices heard.
The coalition will promote the community's rich history and contributions through research, education, and media. Plans include developing a documentary on the Charles Bryant Rebuild, distributing educational materials, and amplifying awareness through think tanks, news outlets, and social media platforms.
Active listening and collaboration with residents are central to the coalition’s approach. Through community workshops, in-person and virtual meetings, and resource distribution, the coalition will empower residents to make informed decisions about their recovery process.
The coalition is dedicated to providing fire-rebuild expertise and connecting residents with minority design and construction professionals. Initiatives include developing Fire Rebuild and Design Guides, sharing critical resources, and fostering partnerships with local trade and AEC organizations.
